| Match Report: The Magpies continue their quest for promotion with this respectable victory over the seasiders of Laugharne. At times this was a bruising encounter and ended with a sending off for Mark Pearce of Laugharne. The early exchanges were dominated by a rugged pack of Laugharne forwards and they had their just rewards with a penalty after 5 minutes kicked by outside half Davies. Tumble had to tackle manfully and diminutive flanker Garry Williams put his body on the line with some ferocious tackling. His co flanker Rhodri Jones foraged well and was ably supported by captain Derek Lewis. Once Tumble were able to obtain some decent possession through the good lineout work of Hefin Dumbrill and Jones, outside half Cerith Humphries kicked astutely. With a platform on which to build, Aled Evans at scrum half was able to snipe at the base of the scrum and gain valuable metres upfield. Still big tackles were needed and Chris Morris stood out as a giant in defence. Tumble then opened their account after full back Steven Hewitt kicked deep into the visitors 22. Rhodri Jones pinched the opposition ball in the line out and, with two powerful drives, the Magpies were over the line for a Mike Powell try which Hewitt converted. Spurred on by this score, Tumble were able to put a few smart passages of back play together and Lee Jones stood out in midfield. Humphries and Hewitt nursed their forwards upfield and, with Gareth Jones on the wing chasing a loose ball, he was unlucky not to get a score as the ball ran dead. With play being taken to the visitors, following a rampaging run from the ox-like prop Kenny Jones, the maul was set up which gained valuable ground for Hewitt to convert a smartly taken drop goal. Two minutes later, he added another penalty when prop Alan King was illegally brought down some 35 metres out. Half time was approaching but the Magpies had another try when Hewitt's kick caused problems in the Laugharne defence. Tumble won the lineout via Dumbrill, some smart driving work by the forwards left Laugharne at sixes and sevens and hooker Powell got his second score. Hewitt converted. Tumble kicked off the second half and, with the ball not going 10 metres, Laugharne opted for a scrum on halfway. Props King and replacement Huw Evans managed to turn the scrum and with backs handling superbly, James Plimmer was able to feed Hewitt who came into the line and his final pass gave Nicky Allinson the score. Hewitt added the extras. The Magpies then produced some scintillating rugby and with Chris Morris producing another crunching tackle, the turnover ball was used to good effect. Humphries made the break on his own 10 metre line, took play deep into the visitors 22 and unselfishly gave the scoring pass to wing Gareth Jones. It was a case of steely defence by Laugharne but, with fresh legs coming on for Tumble, It was a question of damage limitation now. Fifty minutes into the game, following a drive by Tumble's Kenny Jones, the ball found its way to touch. There then followed an almighty punch up involving almost both sets of players which culminated in Pearce having a red card and Dumbrill being given yellow. Hewitt converted the ensuing penalty from some 38 metres. Laugharne fought back and two penalties in home territory saw the defence stretched and Tremlett scored a converted try. Back came the Magpies via a run by Derek Lewis, the ball was set up, Lee Jones proved elusive and Allinson scored wide out. Going into the final quarter, Tumble defended their line heroically and Paul Davies stopped a certain try. Laugharne however were able to recycle and, after seven phases found Tumble wanting and Thomas scored for Chambers to convert. Tumble completed the scoring when Hewitt kicked his third penalty from 40 metres. Two tricky successive away ties now face Tumble starting with Pembroke Dock Harlequins. With the season coming to a head, three points next week will be vital. Steve Lewis |
